Development of renewable energy sources market in Russia

Russia possesses huge reserves of renewable energy sources, and due to its geographical location, sizes, variety of climatic types and peculiarities of the area, the types of renewable energy sources vary a lot. This distinguishes Russia from many smaller countries, where due to the uniformity of geographic conditions one type of renewable energy source dominates.

The large-scale use of the biomass for energetics purposes has a commercial sense in many Russian regions, especially in the north-west of the country, where pulp and paper industry is well developed. In spite of the fact that Russia possesses huge resources, at present renewable power sources are used very little in the country. However, every year the process of the use of alternative energy sources enhances. Production of fuel granules and briquettes is being developed; construction of a number of ethanol fuel and biodiesel plants has been initiated. Biogas production technologies are actively introduced. Solar, wind and hydro-power capacities are applied more widely.
